Is my document truly redacted or just covered with black boxes?+
True redaction. Each page is converted to a high-resolution image with black rectangles drawn over sensitive areas, then assembled into a new PDF. The original text layer is permanently destroyed — there is no hidden text underneath to recover.
What types of sensitive information does auto-detect find?+
Auto-detect identifies Social Security Numbers, credit card numbers, email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses, dates, and common date formats using pattern matching. It also detects person names, organization names, and locations using an AI named-entity recognition model that runs locally in your browser.
Does my file get uploaded to a server?+
No. Your PDF never leaves your browser. All processing — text extraction, PII detection, and redacted PDF generation — happens 100% client-side. You can verify this by opening your browser Developer Tools → Network tab and watching for zero file uploads during processing.
Can I redact specific text that auto-detect missed?+
Yes. You can manually draw redaction boxes anywhere on the document, or use the search-and-redact feature to find and redact all instances of specific text. Manual redaction tools are always free and unlimited.
What happens to the document quality after redaction?+
Pages are rendered at 200 DPI, which produces sharp, readable text. The output PDF will be larger than the original since pages become images, but the quality is suitable for professional use including printing and filing.
What's the difference between free and Pro?+
Free includes all PDF tools (split, merge, convert), manual redaction (draw boxes), search-and-redact, and 3 auto PII detections per day. Pro ($9/month) unlocks unlimited auto PII detection, batch processing, and priority support.
